Desperation

The harsh crunch of the ice with each step as she carried herself forward. The soft flakes of snow coating her lashes and decorating her hair as a white cloud of breath escaped her blue lips.

She held herself tight as she shivered, despite the numerous layers she’d dressed in.

Her eyes darting in every direction, looking for a glimpse, a shadow, something as she tried calling out, but found each time she did the cold air flooded her lungs, stinging her insides.

A desperate tear rolled down her cheek before she finally caught a glimpse of some movement in a bush just on the lakes edge.

And then there he was, wagging his tail, fur covered in snow, paws sliding on the ice towards her with excitement.

He jumped into her arms as she fell backwards laughing warmly as her numb fingers began warming up within his fur.
