The Shadow Of The River

Have you ever

Seen the riverbed?

The shadow of the river

Slithers there

Slipping over

Sand and stone

It brushes fish

And soaking bones

And when it pleases

On occasion

It slides up the bank

Under ferns

And over logs

Along the forest floor

Playing over

Shining leaves

And dancing

To your door

It never waits

The shadow of the river

Silently shuffles

All the way home

Back to the river

Back to the fish

Back to the bones

The shadow settles

Over sand and stone

And shimmers along

The riverbed

I’ve never caught it

I’ve yet to try

But one day

I will.
