The Note

“That’s sweet, Mark! Thank you!” I say, holding the paper in my hands. He left it at the bottom of the stairs, with one single piece of chocolate. It’s not my favorite flavor, but that’s okay. It’s the thought that counts, right?

“Huh?” He says, hugging me from behind. “What’s that?”

I show him the note and the chocolate. “What do you mean, silly?”

I’ve never seen him look so afraid. He steps away from me and walks to the front door, turning the knob to make sure it’s locked.

“Did you watch the security footage from last night?” He asks, grabbing my phone.

I shake my head, putting the note aside and eyeing the chocolate like an intruder. “We shut it off, remember? It needed to be reset, and …”

“Of course!” Mark screams, looking out the window. “Someone must be in the house.”

“Now wait,” I say, heart pounding. “Someone must have been in here, but what if it was one of our friends?”

He shakes his head. “Why would they leave that note? ‘I’ll see you soon’. That’s a threat.”

I gulp as I realize he’s right.
