WRITING OBSTACLE

Create a scene that takes place entirely in a character's memory.

What features of a memory might be slightly different to describing a scene happening in the real world?

Vivid

No. Wait. It didn’t happen like that.

All I remember is a white light. Bright. Really bright. Like nothing I’d ever seen before. I put my hands out to shade me and protect me from the light. But that wasn’t enough. I had to close my eyes too. And even that wasn’t enough. I could still see the light through my closed eyes. It was reddish because I was seeing through my eyelids.

Then, the light slowly dimmed. I was finally able to open my eyes. And there it was. Something so incredible. Something so amazing. Something I had only ever dreamed of. But I couldn’t touch it. I couldn’t move. It was like I was caught in some paralyzing ray or something. I tried to move. I willed my arm to reach out and grab the beautiful creation. But I was stuck. I could not reach anything of that beautiful banquet.

It looked so delicious. It smelled so delectable. Food of every sort was laid out on silver platters. Crystal goblets had every sort of bubbly drink in them. My mouth watered at the huge tables of food. Food. Food! I wanted that food. I ached for that food. Why couldn’t I move!

Then, my stomach started to growl. And I woke up.

“You can start talking any time you’d like. I do get paid by the hour, you know. Well, by the fifty minutes. That’s how long our session is. And you’ve just spent the first ten lying there. I don’t think you were asleep. After all, your eyes were open. But you haven’t said a word. Whatever you’ve been doing, it’s only been in your mind. I suppose you could consider that therapy, but why pay me then, if you’re not going to talk?”

Good question. I stood up and left the office without saying a word.

I wonder if it’s time for lunch.
