POEM STARTER

Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.

Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.

Pump And Beat And Beat And Pump Again

I pump and I pump and I pump and I pump.

And what do I get in return?

I beat and I beat and I beat and I beat.

And where is the thanks I’m earned?

I slave all day just pumping away making sure the blood flows the right way, but what do I get in return?

My arteries clogged, my muscle constantly burning, I long for more than this, I am forever yearning.

I want to be healthy, I want to be free, but instead I’ll just pump and beat and pump and beat and keep the body churning.

I am the sole reason for life, though I’m in direct contact with the brain. It’s me who dies and takes your life away.

I beat and I pump whilst you sit and dump rubbish into my being.

What is the point? Where is the thanks? Am I to keep suffering?

I can murmer, I can skip a beat, I can race, I can pace, and all to keep you going.

I do so much and get nothing back, but it’s not your fault, no I don’t blame you, it’s the way we’re all conditioned.

Even things that seem healthy by face can stop the body going.

Too much salt, too much fat, to much sugar, you know all that.

You can watch what you eat, you can eat the right things, but still I can fail in the end, because my life is a constant drone of trying to succeed in a world which is made to test me.

So here I’ll beat and pump and pump and beat till the day I give up.

That’s all I can do, till the would does better to look after both me and you.
