Reunited Again
It was a day like any other.
I’d woken up at my normal time to go to my workplace at the local coffee shop. It was pretty normal, as it usually is. I sat behind the cash register, taking orders, collecting money, and making large lattes.
“Hello, welcome to Marty’s, how can I help you today?” I joyfully explain to one of my customers. I look at those bouncy blonde curls and ocean blue eyes and a flick of familiarity washes over me, but i cant seem to recall.
“Hi…I’d like a medium cappuchino with 2 sugars.”
“No problem.” I add as I click a few buttons on my register to add to her order. “Anything else?”
“Nope. That’s it”
“Whats the name for the order?” I ask innocently, hoping to recognize the name and be able to place it with the face.
“Tris” She smiles knowingly.
Memories come flooding through my brain unbidden. Skipping through the playground as kidnergarteners. Prepping each other for middle school outside the doors. Me trying to say hi to her in the high school halls, but her ignoring me. Me trying to approach her, only to be greeted by yells and smirks by her many friends.
I stop myself. I am at work, maybe she doesn’t even remember me.
“You’re…Amalia…right?”
Shoot. I’ve been caught. I watch her flick her eyes to the ground as she tries to look anywhere and at anything except me.
She frowns and turns away.
“You know what, forget about it. You can have my coffee”
“Wait!” I reach out my hand to stop her. “Do you want to…hang out sometime?”
I brace myself for the total rejection i faced in high school, but instead receive a warm smile.
“I’d like that.”
