“Just Breathe”
My toes are in the sand,
The warm outter layer breaking away
Revealing a cool undertone, like the sound of a flute,
Soft and sweet, melodic.
The gentle crash and fold
Of the waves guide my breath.
Rhythmic and calm, melodic.
My heart beats like waves
splashing up against kelp covered rocks.
Strong and steady, melodic.
My skin laps up the sun’s peachy, gold rays
Observing the warmth like the love of another day.
I hold myself tenderly,
Letting the salty gusts of wind
Circulate through my body,
Healing myself from within.
I close my eyes and capture the stillness
Of dawn, in its unwavering strength
And undeniable wisdom.
In that moment,
I find love for my enemies.
In that moment,
I find joy in my pain.
In that moment,
I find a wish
Tempting fate,
Ready to break away.
As the burnt orange sun
Rises over scenic waves
And a steady horizon line of a soft, velvet black
I look out into the depths,
Watching the water
A mixture of of emerald green and Persian blue
Flow until the day ends.
Readying my breath
To leave the sand
And the seagulls
And the salt of the sea,
For a world much crueler than this—
As it is one in which I know I will survive—
Because I have kept hidden
A pocket full
Of cool, white sand
To remind me of home—
To remind me I can.
