WRITING OBSTACLE
Create a scene that shows the readers how a character embodies both of the following words: sharp and tender.
Sharp, Then Tender.
Theo and his wife, Sarah, have a reoccurring reservation at the local Italian joint for every Thursday night. The kids are dropped off on their grandparents doorstep, and Theo and Sarah drive the minivan 3 minutes down the road for their weekly adventure.
Theo is an attorney, which requires much time and commitment. He was in court today for 10 hours, exhausted from trying to decode the constant law jargon. Lawyers require thick skin, they must be able to detach themselves from their work. Theo is a fantastic attorney; he is quick witted, always expecting the unexpected, and confident. It’s funny, in his everyday life he is quite the opposite, laidback and go with the flow. Perhaps he enjoys putting on a show and acting in court, after all, it is often about how good your lawyer is and not actually if you’re innocent or guilty.
Sarah, on the other hand, is the type A, the scheduler, the conductor of it all. She commands attention the second she walks into a room. She radiates a kind of confidence that people only dream about. Her ability to think on her feet is astonishing; she is the type of person you want around in an emergency.
This weekly routine of leaving the kids and being alone just the two of them, is something they both look forward to. It’s easy to get caught up inbetween it all. Their ability to be sharp in their day to day is due to the tenderness that holds their relationship together. Every Thursday, they are reminded of their partnership and why they chose each other in the first place. Nothing will ever be perfect, life can be really fucking hard, but Theo and Sarah found the secret many only search for and never find; love is always the answer.
