At Last I See You

My papers fled my grasp as the wind blew them into the air around me. I swore softly under my breath as I hurried to grab them. I didn’t have time for this. I gathered the pages carefully, all but one. I looked over, frowning to see a shoe covering it. I look up at the man that was on the phone, blabbing away to whoever was unfortunate enough to be on the receiving line.

“Excuse me? Could you…?” I nod slightly to his shoe. I huff slightly as I watch the man roll his eyes before walking away, “rude much?” I carefully grab the page, adjusting my papers before standing up again.

My gaze flickers to my watch. 11:21 glares back at me in white bubble letters. Swiftly, I continue on my path, heading to the building I was meant to deliver the papers to. I walk, keeping my posture proper as I do. Preparation is everything and half of preparation is appearing ready.

I think I’m ready, aware of anything that could make me lose focus, but then I see him. At first I keep walking but then I pause. Recognition lights in my eyes as I see him looking back towards me.

“It’s you…” he breathes. He seems just as surprised to see me as I am to see him. I never anticipated seeing him again after that one summer. A stupid summer fling. There was no reason to see him again after that.

It’s a moment of surprise but then he smiles and moves over, pulling me into a hug. I hug back, too stunned to think of doing otherwise. “What are you doing here? I thought you lived out of town…”

“I did.” He looked towards me, eyes shining as he smiled. “I moved here pretty recently. Maybe you could show me around?”

Hesitantly, I glance to the papers. I know I’m meant to be prepping them, planning for every possible alternative so I might make partner. Yet…. I look up towards him, unable to stop the small fond smile. “Yeah…that would be nice.”

He clasps my hand, pulling me off gently. I let him, not because I have the time but because I want to make time.
