STORY STARTER

Inspired by HardCoreWriter

Write a story that starts in a calm library, and ends with an illegal car race...

Focus on how you make a believable transition between these scenes.

Screeching Tyres. Flashing Lights.

Ben was in the library no one really went to, he needed a book for his biology class. He also liked to clear his mind there. He missed his friends, especially Sam an and Emma. College was also a lot to think about, the tests were hard and put a lot of pressure on him. Janice, the old librarien kept a constant chatter as she scanned in the book, telling him about her nephew’s new hobby and then jumping to the next topic of how her cat likes to sleep outside. Janice never really stayed on topic. He wasn’t really listening. His mind started to wonder, and took him back to a dream he had last night; blood, a crashed car, Sam’s face… He shuddered, taking a deep breath. It was five years, why did it still haunt his thoughts ?

“ Are you alright sweetie ? “ Janice asked, jerking him back to reality. “ Oh, yes. Just thinking… “ he said, taking the book from her.

“Sorry Janice could you excuse me ? “ I have to get home. “ Of course sweetie, drive safe ! “ she called after him, waving as he walked out into the cold rainy air. Thunder rumbled in the distance as it started to drizzle.

In his car he rested his head on the steering wheel, his head was throbbing with as massive headache, making it hard to think. His thoughts were suddenly interupted as his phone started buzzing with an incoming call from an unknown number. Ben cautiously answered. “Hello ? Sam !? The old race track ? But that place is private property. Ok. Fine. I’ll come“

A rusty truck’s lights shined through the drizzle, blinding Ben as he drove up the crumbling driveway. “ Sam ? “ he called after getting out. “ Is that you ? “ The car’s lights switched off and the person got out. “ Sure is, I’ve missed you buddy.“ he said. Ben sighed, pulling Sam in for a hug. “ How’ve you been ?” he asked. “ Sam gave him a look. “ I know what you’re trying to do Ben. I need this, and you do too. “You almost got killed last time. “ Ben said quietly.

Sam gingerly touched the scar on his neck, staring into space. As if he was reliving something terrible, flinching as Ben touched his shoulder. “ You sure you want to do this ? “ he asked. Sam looked him dead in the eye. “ A little accident won’t stop me. “ he said turning toward the gate to push it open. “ Just a little accident? “ Ben asked. “ You don’t have to do this. “ Sam looked away. “ I guess not, but… “ Ben looked at him “ But what ? “ Sam brushed him off “ Nothing. Let’s do this. “

On the racetrack Sam’s car revved next to his as he counted them down. Ben’s breathing was shallow and his mouth dry. He was regretting this, what if it happened again. What if….. “ Go ! “ Sam shouted. Their cars flew from the starting line. Ben was ahead, he couldn’t let Sam win…if he does, it might happen again.

Twanty laps to go. Fifteen. Ten laps… Ben was right at the sharp bend when red and blue lights flashed on the walls. Ben slammed on the brakes and his tyres screeched. His heart started racing and fear creeped up on him from his gut. “ No, please no.. “ he muttered “ Get out of the vehicles “ a megaphone said. Ben looked back, spotting the security camera; it’s light blinking. Sam stopped next to him, getting out. “ Oh crap… “ he said.
