The Core Block

“Oh my god, stop being such a pussy.” Annabelle said, rolling her eyes. “It’ll be fine.” She continued, her voice laced with annoyance as she climbed over the fence. The other three watched in awe as she practically hopped over it. “You expect us to know how to do that?” Toby asked, his voice unbalanced as he knew they were trespassing. Annabelle crossed her arms. “Yeah, dumbass.” She scoffed before turning around, scanning the abandoned skate park. Her eyes wandered over the many ramps and rails once run over by skate boards of all types. Annabelle flinched as she heard Toby’s thud. “Dammit..” she muttered to herself before spinning around. She stared down at Toby as he held his shoulder, wincing in pain. “Get up.” Annabelle commands. Sarah jumped down and landed, helping Toby up as she rose. Toby sighs, and picks his glasses up. He gives them a light shake before rubbing the lenses with the hem of his shirt to clean them. He then slides them on and steps to the side as Noah drops down from the fence. He stands up and dusts himself off, his eyes darting around the skate part in exitement. “So, what are we looking for again?” He asks, eargerness poking at his words. Annabelle rubs at her temples. “God.. Noah, calm down.” She spits out, already fed up. “We aren’t looking for anything, just exploring.” Annabelle announces. Sarah nods and turns her head, giving the small park a mere look-over before walking towards one of the ramps, admiring the graffiti. Annabelle gives Noah and Toby a warning glance before walking off, not too far from Sarah, but far enough to where she could examine another part of the skate park. Noah and Toby look at each other, then shrug. “Well.. I’m going that way.” Noah says, pointing towards a dip in the park. Toby nods amd turns around, looking around. Noah walks off and Toby spots a shed. He sighs and begins to make his way over to it, clearly not wanting to be there at the moment. Tony adjusts his glasses and takes a deep breath. He places his hands in the rusty handle of the oddly shaped shed. He pulls the handle and the door lets out an ear-piercing shreak. He tenses at the noise but continues. Sarah glances over at Toby, curious. Toby sticks his head in the shed, his big blue eyes immediately landing on a box.. though it’s radiating a soft glow. He looks back out the shed. “Hey, I think I found something!” He calls out. Annabelle sighs and turns to him. “And what exactly is it?” She asks, expecting something pathetic. “It’s a box, but it’s glowing!” He yells. Annabelle raises her eyebrow. “A glowly box-? Hold on, I’m coming.” She reassures. Now Noah looks up, his eyes meeting Sarah’s as they silenly communicate. They nod and both jog over to the shed. A few minutes later, and all four of the teenagers are in the shed. Noah and Sarah are crouched down next to the box, poking at it. Annabelle leaned against the wall of the shed and crossed her arms, one foot crossing the other. Toby fixed his glasses and turned to Annabelle. “Do you know what it is?” Annabelle scoffs. “How should I know? I didn’t place it there.” She responds, her voice seeping with needles. Toby glances back at the box and takes a step forward. He crouches down and slowly tranced patterned against the box. Inside, the light was seeping through the edges of the box, giving it an almost illuminating glow in the growing darkness around the group. He runs his hands up the side of the box and gently tugs at the fold. He looks inside and slips his hand into the box, the light practically taunting him. The light pleading for a touch. Toby is about to pull his hand out when suddenly, the almost fire-like light swallows his arm and pulls Toby inside, before shaking violently. “Ahhh!” Noah Shreiks, horrified, while the other two stare in disbelief. The box continues to shake as both Noah and Sarah back up. Annabelle straightens, taking a step back. The box suddenly explodes, splotches of light thrown all over the room. The unexpected burst of light blinds the teenagers, and they stumble around, squinting. “What the hell?” Annabelle questions, rather angry and confused, though more afraid. Sarah accidentally takes a step into one of the puddles of light, falling in. “Shit- Noah!” She yells, though her voice fading as she falls. Noah turns his head in the direction of Sarah’s voice, terrified, and steps towards the puddle. He, too, falls in, though all he manages is a gasp. Annabelle freezes, paralyzed in fear and disbelief. The light spreads like wildfire, seeping into her shoes, before finally swallowing her as well. Annabelle is ripped out of her thoughts and she attempts to save herself by grabbing onto the edge of the floor, though she slips and falls. “No!!” She gasps, her eyes widening. The box begins to shake again, as if calling the light back in to its respected home, and the light travels back into the box before closing it and setting away, waiting for the next pair of naive and foolish humans.
