Memory Of Coffee

In the semi-darkness, the pebbles looked like coffee beans. Shaun could almost smell the aroma of freshly roasted beans, despite it having been years since he last smelled it. Still it felt to him like yesterday.

He took the calm moment to remember the coziness of his favourite café, the way the coffee beans turned slowly darker with each turn of the rotor that was steering them. The air getting filled with the chocolaty smell. The sound of the grinder turning the beans into a sand like powder. The new complexities the smell exposes when it gets drowned in hot water. The delicious bitterness, paired with a surprising fruitiness of the first sip.

How Shaun wished to be able to experience this again. But he can’t. Coffee was a luxury that wasn’t available anymore. One of many, but the one Shaun misses most.

Instead he was hiding in a hole, listening to every sound surrounding him, imagining the pebbles on the floor to be coffee beans.

He would not be able to stay long and he needed to find a place to sleep.

Shaun shook his head to get the memories out and listened carefully. Determining that it was as safe as it would get, he jumped out of his hole of coffee beans and started to continue on his aimless way to find safety.
