Last Sunset
The feeling of elation vanquished my whole body. A truly life or death piece of paper, The letter for my admittance into the U.S Navy. As I pack my bag ready to be deployed. There’s my family sunshines on their faces and proud tears falling down their cheeks. It was obvious even though they were happy, negative thoughts of my demise clouded their minds. Couldn’t help to think about the
call they might receive. That call would put my mom in the hospital instantaneously. Quickly snapped back into reality from thinking negatively, I continue to board my flight. Frightened as I was the rusty old army plane grumbled and rocked back and fourth adding a little fear to the flight.
Bumpy landing into the military airport in Vietnam, No sight of vehicles or any type of transport. Walking through dense jungles was the only choice, Quiet as it seems, it’s owners hover over our troupes in their tree branches. The snakes curling up on trees and just blending with the environment, waiting for someone to rub his back to attack. Wrestling the heavy muddy lake to create pathways was just a strand of our problems. Finally arriving to our campsite, dreaded conditions with little to no food was laying ahead waiting for us. Left with only the packaged food to fight a whole country, my chances of survival are dwindling.
Sounds of gunshots rattling the banana leaves frightened everybody. Jumped up and we rushed to the armory for weapons. Turns out the Vietnamese soldiers has ambushed our base gaining an advantage. Rippled through our fences and caught us off guard as they surrounded our base. Left us with no choice but to surrender to their attack. They Shouted to us as if we understood their language, pointed the guns in our faces to kneel or die. As we pleaded for mercy to spear us another time to see joy on our family’s faces of our homecoming. Forced to make a crucial decision our Sargent either has to save our country or die saving it. Always carrying the red button Sargent he might have to use it now to avenge his country.
Sargent fingers sticked to the trigger of the button waiting for the right moment. “Boop” one of the Vietnamese gun shot a young troupe in his heart as he drops dead. He tapped the button and a countdown begins confused of what will happen Sargent and his men sat bamboozled. As the gentle breeze was interrupted with what looked like a plane, nose dived into the campsite. I took a closer look and shouted “Bomb”. My stomach caved in with an eerie force…the effect of the last sunset I will ever see. Trying to flee the camp my hopes was in vain but I died trying.
