Cinder
The Nexus District, where Ash's nightclub "Cinder" is located, occupies a unique position in New Meridian's stratified society—neither part of the impoverished outer zones nor the pristine inner sectors where the elite reside.
Built atop what was once a thriving industrial area, the Nexus District serves as a buffer zone between social classes. Repurposed warehouses and factories have been transformed into entertainment venues, apartments, and businesses that cater to mid-level professionals and the occasional slumming aristocrat from the inner city.
By day, the district bustles with commerce—independent shops, tech repair facilities, and food vendors line the streets beneath a web of elevated pedestrian walkways. Digital advertisements flicker across buildings, though not as ostentatious as those in the city center. Government surveillance is present but less intrusive than in other areas—cameras positioned at major intersections rather than on every corner.
By night, the Nexus transforms. Neon signs illuminate rain-slicked streets in purples, blues, and reds. The district becomes a playground for those seeking entertainment just edgy enough to feel dangerous without actual risk. Music spills from clubs, including Cinder, which occupies a former metalworks building with exposed brick walls and industrial piping repurposed as decor.
The clientele is diverse—tech workers and security personnel, mid-level government employees, university students, and underground artists all converge in this middle ground. It's precisely this mix that makes the Nexus valuable to both sides of New Meridian's divide: to the wealthy, it's a taste of "authentic" city life; to those from the outer zones, it represents the possibility of upward mobility.
For Ash, the district offers the perfect anonymity. The constant flow of unfamiliar faces means few questions about his past, while the semi-legitimate businesses provide cover for someone who prefers to stay off official radar. The area's transient nature—people constantly moving in and out—allowed him to establish himself without deep roots that might expose his hidden history.
Behind the vibrant facade, however, the Nexus hides its own secrets. Underground networks operate beneath the government's gaze, and rumors suggest some venues serve as meeting points for those dissatisfied with the United Sovereignty's control. Cinder itself sits at the edge of the district, near a maintenance tunnel that leads to the abandoned subway system—a geographic advantage that will prove crucial when Ash needs to disappear.
