POEM STARTER

Write a Petrarchan Sonnet on the theme of Autumn.

A Petrarchan Sonnet has 14 lines; the first 8 must have a rhyme scheme ABBAABBA, the last 6 can have variable rhymes, but are normally split into 2 sets of 3 lines.

Autumnal

Leaves on the ground around my feet

Wind whips round and through my bones

Takes my breath and chills the stones

That line this quiet empty street.

Those sunny days no longer greet

Me as walking, quiet and alone,

I think on how I shall atone

For sins committed when life was sweet.

My heart believes the death of warmth

Will cleanse my soul of shame and grief

But I know my heart’s true wish:

To be content as is, at peace.

When winter’s chill ceases to be

May spring bring forth new life for me.
