The Never Ending Voice
The clock strikes 6:00 and he’s talking away.
“Wakey, wakey, Benny Boo!”
I roughly fling the covers off and stomp to the bottom drawer of my desk. I yank it open.
Starring up at me with a annoying smile is my head.
“Thought you could drown me out in here, didn’tcha, Benny Boo?” My head says.
I don’t respond.
“Well, pooh on you, Benny Boo! Ya can’t get rid of me that easily!”
He’s knows I hate being called Benny Boo, but there’s no point in telling him again. I grab him from the drawer and place him on the desk.
“Yup, just like everyday, you’re going to have to listen to everything I say and do everything I tell you to do. I’m in charge here. Don’t you forget that, Benny Boo! Now brush my teeth.”
Something like rage rises within me.
I shake my head.
“Hey! Stop that!” my head says.
Not today. He doesn’t get to call the shots today. How many times has he steered me wrong? He cannot be trusted!
I walk with him to the window.
“Hey, what are you doin?” my head says.
I open the window.
“Now wait just a minute…” my head says.
I hold him out in front of me.
“Let’s just stop and THINK about this for a second, Benny- I mean Ben..”
I punt my head.
It sails through the window, across my back yard, into the neighbors yard, out of sight.
I sigh.
I go about my day in peace.
