STORY STARTER

You move into a flat with very thin walls, and can hear the people upstairs plotting something exciting.

Describe how you feel and what you do with the information.

The Things I Hear From Downstairs

I moved into a new flat today, mildew creeping on the walls. The people who live upstairs are so loud and obnoxious. As I was getting ready to go to a job interview, I heard them upstairs, talking loudly, “Let’s play my favorite game, Get Out of The Hole with the new person downstairs!”

A different voice says, “My dementia has taken over, please remind me how to play.”

“Well first, we put the victim- I mean player in the hole I dug out next to the squash. We then leave them in there with no food or water, making them rely on eating worms and rainwater. If they get out, they don’t die! They win! But most most people lose.”

“Sounds fun! But first I must put in my dentures”

“Ok, Gerald.”

_What?! This is crazy! Are these people really planning on doing this to me? _

On the bus ride to the job interview, I plan what I’ll say.

I arrive at the office and sit down at a sleek looking desk.

A older man walks in the room and sits down across from me.

“Hello, It’s so nice to meet you! Let’s get straight to it, what makes you qualified to work here?”

“Well I-“ A old woman walks in the room and stands next to the interviewer.

“Are we about ready, Gerald?” She says, making uncomfortable eye contact with me.

_Wait, Gerald? From upstairs?_

“Oh yes, I just have one more question for you: do you want to play Get Out of The Hole with us?”
