The Last Stand
We stood at the metals door in silence. We had been preparing for this moment for months but now that it was here the feeling over the air was not fierce as the plans had been, but scared and heavy. The last 100 of us left fighting for our dead planet. Or at least that’s what we are saying. In truth it feels more like a final stand.
When the world died it didn’t explode, or dry out. It decayed.
But the venomous atmosphere and raging, unstable elements were the least of our worries.
With the Spores, slime, and rotting mess came a creature, designed to to thrive and feed on the decay.
They looked like insects but were the size of houses with needle pointed legs, and, were very possessive of their delicious world. Clean… alive, things like us threaten that.
They infiltrated and anihallated little by little and the last of us they chased here… the save haven. We have been locked up in here for the last 3 years. But they wait. Just outside the walls they made nests where they lie, waiting to finish us once and for all.
An alarm blares through the room of the save haven, announcing the door’s dramatic slow movements as it creaked open. The sky was a sick olive colour, a thick mist filled the air. And then the roar. The ungodly sound that spoke one universal truth
Death.
They bounded from their nests ready to devour. A war cry sounded from the mouths of my comrades and we charged forward.
Our dismal spears flew through the sky, slowing a few down but ultimately making less than an a dent. Those wielding large blades kept low to attack the undersides of the beasts.
I threw my spear at the creature infront of me, hitting home right through one of its eyes.
It reared back with a gut twisting sound, its pointed leg swinging for me. I dodged it just in time, flinging myself to the sticky floor. I wiped the substance from helmet and instantly wished I hadn’t.
It seemed only a minute had passed but there was already 4 dead parasites, bleeding out on the battlefield…. Each surrounded by at least 20 dead humans. I looked around.
The white uniform wave that ran out here now resembled wilted flowers, few and far apart struggling against the forces that were intent on destroying them. I looked up at the creature rearing onto its hind legs again, bringing the needle allign with me just a few metres higher. I turned to look at my fallen comrades. If I roll now I can dodge it…
I closed my eyes and allowed myself to go back to when the world was green.
