An Utterance Of Truth

“I’m not kidding, Rue.” Jenna’s words made the woman freeze. Rue’s girlfriend stood behind the kitchen island with crossed arms. Rue swallowed when she turned, giving the love of her life a toothy awkward smile.

“Jenna, come on-“

“Rue I swear! I’m gone!”

Rue cringed at the raised voice. Rue stirred her tea and loosed a shaky breath, trying to come up with an excuse. Dr. Garrot said she needed to establish more boundries. This could be one of those moments?

“No.” Jenna’s eyebrows flew so high they could’ve meshed with her hairline. Jenna stared for a moment, as if waiting for Rue to double back. And when Rue held her tongue, Jenna chuckled. Then laughed. Then cackled.

“You narcissistic,”

“Jenna-“

“Bratty,”

“Jenna, please,”

“Bitch!”

The words settled between the two of them. Rue’s teeth ached from how much she clenched her jaw. Rue had been called so much worse by her enemies, the super villains she stopped everyday. But her girlfriend? The love of her life?

“How dare you?” Rue spat. Jenna stood her ground, her lips a thin line. Rue slammed her coffee cup onto the wood marble countertops, and the stone itself cracked. Jenna’s eyes widened. Only a superhero could have that strength.

“I am stuck,” Rue ground through her teeth, “Saving selfing brats like you day after day, and all I ask is some damn privacy! And yet you have the audacity to call me a bitch?!”

“Are you telling me that you are the Steel Woman?” Jenna gaped.

“Doesn’t matter if I am or not, all I’m saying now is I’m DONE!”

Rue’s voice echoed through their shared apartment. Jenna’s lip quivered, and Rue stomped to the front door.

“You know now Jenna, but it doesn’t matter. You are leaving.”
