WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Annabel

Write about a place that is severely affected by the weather.

This could be a real place, or a fantasy setting where you could invent new types of weather. You could try to be intensely descriptive, or focus on the impact and significance of the weather in this place.

Storm Setting

At the start this was your average small midwest town. What used to be a normal intersection on the corner now left in a pile of rubble. Trees uprooted and strewn all over. Active electrical wires hung down from the power poles. Houses went from respectable structures to being completely unrecognizable in a matter of moments. Branches, limbs and even entire trees thrown thru homes like spears. Everything had been calm at first just a regular thunderstorm. What quickly started as a little rain with a boom here, and there became much worse in a hurry. It was if nature had just ran through this quiet town like an angry toddler. The rain picked up considerably as time passed but the cracks of thunder seemed widely spaced. As the rain died down everything seemed to calm itself. Then came the loudest whistling sound imaginable. It was if a train was being driven right down the middle of the street blaring its horn the entire way. A large funnel cloud began rotating just south of the street corner. The tornado had touched down, throwing the contents of its path around haphazardly. Signs found a couple miles from where they had been posted. Power poles and trees broken like toothpicks. Peoples homes and cars destroyed. The tornado carried on its path of destruction staying on the ground for a matter of minutes. This was all it took for part of the town to be completely uprooted. Business suffered just as well as residential buildings. Parts of roofs peeled back from the winds. Apartment complex’s had numerous issues between trees down, building’s damaged, and power loss. As the winds calmed and rain stopped on the back end of the storm people began surveying the damage reported. It was found very quickly that millions of dollars in damage had been done. Businesses alone were looking at months to rebuild. People were removed from there homes and placed in hotels by insurance companies. A small town had been force renovated by Mother Nature in a matter of minutes. Just as quickly as it came through it left a path of despair in its wake. Somehow in the calmness of the damage it left one parting gift for the citizens effected by the storm a big bright rainbow shined overhead in the sun. Proving that as bluntly forceful as nature is it will show its beauty in the most subtle ways possible as well.
