Image And Likeness
So alike.
The first thing anyone says who's seen us both and lived.
So alike.
When the world was young (we were, too),
I remember your face, hidden behind light.
The sun dimmed when we looked at you,
I remember thinking I'd never see anthing that could shake my heart,
And being proven wrong.
And it wasn't enough.
You didn't need to be seen,
You needed to make sure we were blind except to you.
You didn't need to be heard,
You needed to assure yourself that, apart from you, our ears were just ringing.
I would have been happy to make music with you,
You know it's one of the things we loved, but you can't make music when you can't hear above your own voice.
You needed to be loved, but you'd settle for being despised as long as someone was saying your name.
People muttered it in terror, in the middle of the night,
Knowing what they'd seen was not of this world and not a better one, either.
I think you must have begun to enjoy it.
That's how it began.
Now it has to end.
They told me it had to be me to end you.
So alike.
When I face you,
I'll tremble,
And never let you see it.
I cannot let you blot out the world,
But don't look up for too long because I may catch your eye,
And see myself.
