Winter Walk

I wandered down the hiking path,

And felt the crunch of frost,

As I scanned the frozen trees,

And knew that I was lost.

Through the cold and crisp I trod,

My coat pulled tightly round,

Looking for a sign or sight,

To find familiar ground.

The naked branches swayed above,

The ground held stiff below,

My shoulders shrug from shivering,

And my legs begin to slow.

I came across a tunneled stretch,

The brick damp and dark within,

With many sharp, clear frozen teeth

In a yawning, wicked grin.

As I stepped into the dim,

Breathing life into my fingers.

Thinking now on my fate,

A doubt begins to linger.

In a flash of fear and panic I,

In fearing for my life,

Run straight through and see…my car,

It seems I have arrived.
