POEM STARTER

Write a winter Pantoum.

A pantoum is a poem where each stanza is 4 lines, and the second and fourth line of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next. As this creates a lot of repetition, try to pick a winter theme that would benefit from emphasis of certain lines.

Hometown

It’s winter back in my hometown

The snow will be falling slowly down

Twinkling lights will be hung downtown

That’s just how it’s done in a small town

The snow will be falling slowly down

Children are playing on the playground

That’s just how it’s done in a small town

And so it will will stay until sundown

Children are playing on the playground

Parents are on the porch counting down

And so it will stay until the sundown

As the snow is falling all around

Parents are on the porch counting down

There isn’t a single face with a frown

As the snow is falling all around

“Welcome,” I say, “to my hometown.”
