POEM STARTER
Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.
Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.
Red River Running
Pulse thrums within—
valves open, snap shut,
muscle fibers contract and release.
A surge, a press, a river carried—
red cells, heavy with breath.
Walls thicken with effort,
each squeeze a measured response—
a tireless engine of pressure and flow
igniting motion, igniting life.
Echoes ripple through vessels,
veins and arteries branching, bending.
A red river running
Till it grows weary
The beating slows, then stops.
And suddenly, it’s over.
