WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a descriptive piece about a desolate landscape.
Think about how you can describe both the physical aspects, and atmosphere, of this place.
There
The cold breeze sent a shiver up her spine. There was something eerie about this desolate place, yet also familiar. The moon mutely reflected off the stone that was jutting out of the desert sand and allowed her to see without a torch once her eyes had adjusted. Everything was tinged red as if a thousand battles had been fought in this very place and the sand and stone and shrubbery soaked up every last ounce of blood from the fallen warriors. This barren place with rock structures piercing the ground off into the horizon is where she would meet “it.” She was no stranger to a desert trip, but this was different. In the cold night, when all the heat that was gathered from the sun the day before had disapated, a sobering silence would fill the area and there would be a shift. The red got slightly redder and the bushes began to tremble, everything seemed to come in and out of focus, then suddenly a snap and all was still again. She had crossed the veil, she was now in the spirit realm. At first she couldn’t tell, everything looked the same, the red hue, slick mounds of stone popping out of the sand, the larger stone structures dotting the land off in the distance, but as soon as she took a step forward, a kelidoscope of colors flashed in her visual field and everything began to ripple and breathe. The movement was subtle, but enough for her to put a hand on the boulder next to her to steady herself. Everything shifted and distorted like she was viewing it underwater and the air almost had a liquid-like quality. More iridescent colors faded in and out on the terrain and moved along edges as if there were train tracks for them to follow. It was both beautiful and scary; would she be able to return to the “real world” after meeting “it” in the spirit realm?
