The comfort of the soft linens against my skin was relaxing. After a long day of school, I was exhausted. I reminisced over elementary school. Oh, how only a year ago things would have been so much easier. But that’s time for you, it comes, it goes, it causes havoc, or it may fix just about everything.
“Our father who art in heaven…” I prayed. I always prayed before bed. This was just about the only time of the day when I was completely calm, which made me able to focus on my prayer.
As soon as I finished praying, I shifted to bed. Memories throughout the day ran throughout my mind. Eventually, though, it was over. The night sure went by a lot faster than typical, which could have been due to the irritating buzz that most likely awoke me.
I groaned, I didn’t open my eyes nor did I move. I wasn’t even quite aware of my own body yet.
But soon enough, I was engulfed in the morning, and morning means to be awake.
I moved my head, and sat up, yawning. I realized something though. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. I looked around, anxiety swallowing me whole.
“Where am I?” I said, scratching my head. I looked around, I was on a bench, yet it wasn’t at all familiar. The bench that I had been laying on was in a city, which was not even close to something I had ever seen.
Odd enough, my clothes we’re not mine. Had I switched bodies? What was happening? I immediately held my hair close to my eyes. _Same color_, I thought. And it was the same length, yet it wasn’t tangled or messied up at all. I stood up, and as someone passed by, I immediately ran over to him.
“Excuse me, sir?” I asked, tapping his shoulder. He checked his watch, by his look (a briefcase and a suit) he was definitely off to work.
“Yes?” He said, rather annoyed. “What do you want, kid?” Well, obviously if I had switched bodies with someone I was still a young girl.
“What city have I stumbled upon?”
“‘Stumbled upon’? What kid talks like that?” He scoffed, “New York— can’t you read?” He pointed towards a sign that said: _Welcome to New York, New York!_

I turned around, and before I knew it, he was crossing the street along with a crowd of others.
New York? No, I don’t live in New York, I live in Indiana. I’m a country girl, not a city girl. There was no way this could be New York. I’ve seen New York in pictures! If anything, this is some futuristic, unbelievable town!
Luckily, a few minutes later I found myself a bathroom. In the bathroom (not only did I use it) there was a mirror, in the mirror I saw myself. I looked the same, but instead of pajamas, I was wearing jeans and a blue plaid shirt. My hair was in a long ponytail, but otherwise, I looked the same.
On my way out of the bathroom, I found a stack of newspapers. “I ought to read this, then maybe I’ll learn more about what has happened.” I said quietly to myself.
I didn’t get any farther than the date, and I was in shock. _April 3rd, 2025_, I read. I looked at all the others, and they were marked with the same, horrifying date.
I rushed to a woman walking down the street. “Ma’am! Ma’am! Please tell me that it’s April 3rd, 1954! Please don’t say that newspaper wasn’t lying!” I begged and pleaded.
“No… the newspaper was definitely right.”
After that everything was a blur. The only thing I knew for certain was that something bad had happened. Something… terrible.
