Release

It had been so long ago…she didn’t even speak to anyone who once knew any more. The people she did it with had all moved or died, and the person they did it to…well, she was dead, too, of course. Her heart sank to her feet at the thought of it coming out now, so many years later. She had a family now, a child and a husband, who knew nothing of who she was before, of what she did for money. That was a different woman entirely; she even had a different name then: Rebecca, and now she was Eve. A name that gave her a new beginning, in a new country and new people. But … someone here knew and it made her question how much she really changed. In some strange way, it felt like a release, like all the stress and secrets she had been holding were finally released and she could breathe easy.

“Excuse me?” Someone said from behind her and she trembled as she turned.

“Can I help you?” They asked.

“I’m sorry?”

“This is my car you’re standing in front of. I need to get in.”

She laughed, and laughed, and laughed, as the person gave her odd looks and drove away, the note on their windshield flapping in the wind.

Maybe they would feel release one day, too.
