The Body

The body sways precariously. Little feet dangling above the dirt floor.

The feet are too little, and my heart catches in my throat as I watch them sway. I want to reach out, to hold the body, to whisper the words that have now been lost to time.

By the time I build the courage, it is falling, and I have missed my chance again.

No, not falling. It jumps to the ground. The body is a boy who hits the ground, lighting up his sneakers. He kicks the ground in frustration, unable to complete the set of monkey bars above him. He is not the body- he is full of life.

No this is not the body. This is not the time I found it, or the place it was in.

The body is gone now, buried beneath the dirt. It no longer sways, even if my eyes deceive me. It only remains to haunt what once was.
