A Military Mess, Or A Game Of Chess
“It’s an easy shot.”
“Take the shot!” The slender archer rested her arrow against her bow and pulled it back. Taking a deep breath, she aimed at the bulky knight across the battlefield and shot. The knight fell to the floor. The archer, smiling victoriously, walked over to her target.
“I never miss.” She said.
“Dang it!” Cried Connor as Nikki took his rook off the board.
“That was a bad move, Connor.” She said, setting down his rook in front of her. He glared down at the bishop that had just taken the rook out. “Speaking of which, it’s your move again.” Said Nikki. Connor scowled at the board.
“What are your orders, general Connor?” Asked the shrinking army behind him. Connor turned and looked at his soldiers. He had two archers left, one knight, one heavy hitter left, only a few of the small minute men, and the queen, at the back of the group, remaining silent.
“Please, general, do something!” Cried the king, his voice cracking. Connor looked at the Enemies army. They still had most of their soldiers in tact. The only thing that had been hit hard were the minute men, but they barely did anything anyways. Connor turned to his army.
“Archer 1-“
“I have a name.” Said the Archer, irritated.
“Oh right, uh…”
“It’s opal! My names opal, jeez.”
“Hey don’t talk to your general that way!” Connor cleared his throat. “Opal, move five paces north.” He said. The archer saluted.
“You got it boss.”
Nikki looked down at the bishop Connor just moved.
“Interesting move.”
“I’m not as terrible as you think I am.”
“Well you must be because you obviously didn’t see my rook right there.” Connor looked down at the board, and sure enough, there was a clear path for Nikki’s rook right to his bishop.
Connor didn’t see it coming. One of the enemies heavy hitters charged at Opal, and before she could react, she had a sword through her gut. She tumbled to the ground, the heavy hitter picking her up and carrying her away.
“No!” Cried Connor. The army bowed their heads in respect for opal.
“No!” Said Connor. Nikki chuckled as she picked up Connors bishop. “I wish I had seen that coming.”
“Yeah I bet you do.”
“I’m going to win this.”
“We’ve played like five times and you haven’t even won once.”
“I’m determined to win.” Nikki shrugged.
“Okay, suit yourself.”
“We have to win this.” The whole army behind Connor moaned.
“Sir, no offense or anything, but we’re all exhausted. We’ve fought at least six battles today, couldn’t we just surrender?” Said the other archer. Connor turned.
“Don’t you want glory? Don’t you want to have the pleasure of saying I beat general Nikki at her own game?”
“Well sure, but we haven’t even won one battle and she’s won… all of them.”
“I’m not giving up! Call up the queen! Things are about to get messy.”
“Ohhh your queens coming out, huh?” Said Nikki.
“It’s my best shot.” Said Connor.
“Maybe but I don’t see how you’ll beat me.”
“Highness, attack!” The tall and slender queen bit her lip.
“But general-“
“JUST DO IT!” He cried. The queen ran forward and took out one of the enemies knights. “Ha ha!” Said Connor, when an arrow flew up and hit his queen. “Oh crud.”
“I told you it was a bad idea.”
“You did not.” Said Connor. “You just said, oh boy your queen is coming out. Well, I’m not giving up, Nikki! I’ll sit here forever if I have to!”
“Check mate.”
“What?” He said angrily, staring at the board.
“GAH! I’m surrounded! Help me, general, HELP ME!” Cried the king. Soldiers in black armor had surrounded the king and were pointing their weapons at him. General Connor facepalmed and moaned.
“Take him. You’ve got him surrounded.” He said to the soldiers.
“WHAT?! NO PLEASE!” Said the king. The soldiers picked him up and carried him to the other side of the battlefield. Connors army all sighed in unison.
“Are we gonna have to fight another battle?” Said one of the minute men.
“Shut it, Archie, you’re just a pawn.” Said Connor.
“A pawn who’s been fighting for HOURS!” Said Archie.
“Go again? You wanna get beat again?” Said Nikki, tapping Connors king with her finger.
“No, I’m gonna keep playing until I beat you. I’m determined.” Nikki shrugged.
“Okay. Let’s do it.”
