Kenny’s Surprise

“Welcome to River Nature Retreat”, the sign said in faded blue writing.

Kenny couldn’t believe his luck. He had won a two-week stay at the fancy resort after sending in twenty cat food labels to “My Cat” Foods Limited. His name was then drawn out of a barrel and he was the winner! He was beyond happy. His job as an accountant was boring - dealing with numbers all day long was getting tiresome, but he loved the routine of it. Tax time he found very stressful, and that had just finished, so he was in need of a break.

Kenny lived alone. He liked it that way. He liked his life very well organised, like a ship. He had never married - never even had a girlfriend. He was much too shy for that type of thing.

He liked his home well organised too - from his socks in rows in his sock drawer to his fridge magnets lined up alphabetically on the fridge door.

He hoped River Nature Retreat sold magnets. He would like to add one to his collection.

The gravel crunched under his wheels as he drove up to the small Reception office. He parked ever so carefully next to the door, and walked inside.

“Ah yes, I’m Kenny Higgins...I won the ‘My Cat’ competition?” he stammered to the receptionist, who was wearing jeans and a blue t-shirt with ‘River Nature Retreat’ embroidered in bold white stitching.

“Oh, we’ve been expecting you, Mr Higgins!” she enthused. “If you’ll just sign here, I will give you your bungalow key.”

Kenny signed the book in front of him.

“It’s number four, just over to your right.”

She handed Kenny a shiny key with an enormous wooden keyring attached.

It read “No. 4”.

“And here is your list of activities, Mr Higgins,” she said sweetly.

Kenny had not been expecting any activities. He thought he would do some birdwatching (he had brought his binoculars).

He drove slowly the thirty feet to his bungalow, then got out of the car and went inside. The room was decorated in blue curtains and bedspread, with a generic beach painting on the wall.

Satisfied, and with the room to his liking, Kenny thought he would take a walk.

He followed the signs that said ‘To Recreation Area’ and thought to himself how lovely everything was. The trees, the path, the birds, the sky. Everything was perfect.

Until he turned the last corner...

The scene that he encountered took his breath away, and not in a good way.

There were naked people everywhere! Some were playing badminton, others were playing volleyball, while yet others were in the pool...and everyone was starkers!

Kenny did not know where to look. He stood there speechless, opening his mouth like a fish.

He felt a rush of heat to his face and knew that he was blushing.

He looked everywhere but ahead of him.

But suddenly he had an epiphany!

He remembered times when he was a little boy, taken to the beach and paddling naked in the salty water.

He remembered the first time he ever took his shirt off at the public pool.

A sense of excitement and possibility started to grow in Kenny’s mind.

“What the heck!” he thought to himself with glee, as he started to unbutton his shirt...
