The Cool Of October (can You Unfold The Mystery?)

Back and forth back and forth, the little girl pushed herself higher and higher. The large wooden swing creaked and crackled as it was mostly rotten. It was late one morning and the little girl did the same thing she always did after leaving school. She left, and went straight to the old swing set her great grandfather built for her father. What was so different about today? How could anyone have known what seemed like a normal everyday routine would turn into countless sleepless nights, tears, and pain.

~days later~

Her mothers name is Emily. But normally she goes by Em. As she sat staring at the swing set where her little girl had disappeared days before. she reminisced about her.

Her, long wavy blonde hair, her piercing blue eyes, and smile that could light up a room. If perfect could be human this little girl what be it.

She was truly an angel.

“My sweet Samantha.” She uttered as tears poured from her face. She could still hear her, giggling and speaking in the back of her mind.

If only I hadn’t have let her go! If only I would have been there! If only! If only! If only! The words echoed in her mind. The silence was deafening

As she sat alone In the cool of October.

~another few days past~

*thud thud thud* she heard a nock at her door.

She ran to the door praying to see her little girls face. But instead, a tall man with black hair greeted her with a handshake. “My name is special agent, William Turner with the FBI, I’m here to help you find your daughter. Your Emily Foster correct?” He asked. “Uhm…. Yes.. that’s me…” he was slightly taken aback, most of the people he says this to in reference to finding their children are overjoyed. But something felt odd. Instead of her looking relieved, he noticed her muscles began to tense. Her eyes clearly had fear in them. She crossed her arms.

“You can find my little girl?” She asked with a fake caring tone in her voice. The lights in her ceiling cast her face at an odd glow, something about this, didn’t feel right.

~two weeks since Samantha Fosters

disappearance~

Hope was fading fast. As the days grew colder and their thoughts grimmer. William had only one lead. “So when did you last see Samantha?” He asked. “Just before school.” She replied.

“And where did she go missing again?” He asked.

“There is a swing set her great grandfather built for her father when he was a child. It’s at the end of this street and down a small path. Though, everyone knows it has Dog Wood Trail.”

“So she went missing at the swing set?”

“Yes.”

“How would you know that?”

She paused for a moment.

“It was a daily routine for her. She always went there after school.” He saw her start to stiffen as the air felt tense.

“But if you didn’t see her after school. Then how would you know for sure that’s where she went missing?”

She stopped once again.

“I guess I assumed.”

“Hmph. And where is her father? Can I speak to him?”

“I uhh, not now… he’s uhm…. Out of town.”

She was clearly lying but he played along.

~one month after Samantha’s disappearance~

“I can’t believe you found her. I knew for sure she would be dead.” She said to him.

“It takes a while. But, it’s worth it.” He replied.

He leaned down to make eye contact with Samantha. “Do you have any idea who did this to you?” He asked her.

Samantha looked up at her mother.

“Look at me. Do you know who did this to you?”

“Yes.” She nodded.

“Are you close to them?”

“Yes.”

“How long have you known them?

“My whole life.”

Chills shot down his spine at the response.

“It was….”
