“This will never work, you know.”

Sigh. “Yes, I know. We are from two completely different realms. But…”

“But nothing. We are not meant for each other. Never have been. Never will be. Our kinds are too different.”

“Yes, but one date can’t hurt, can it? It’s all I ask. One date. I have kept my feelings hidden, but I have always admired you from afar.”

“Do tell.”

“I love the way you are aloof. You cozy up to people and they love that. But then you disappear without a trace. And they are sad when you do. But you always show up again. Such a tease. I love that. Especially since people still love you when you do it. When you tease them.”

“Well, what about you?”

“Me?”

“Yes. I’ve admired you from afar too.”

“Do tell.”

“Everybody loves you. I mean everybody. You give them your undivided attention and they love you for that. You could be in a crowded room and the one person you are with knows you are there just for her. She is the apple of your eye at that moment. Whether she is the most beautiful or the most pitiful. She knows you only have eyes for her. And you will listen no matter what she says. And you will be her friend forever.”

“That’s just the way I’m made.”

“And the aloofness is just the way I’m made. I like to rub up against somebody and then walk away.”

“And I like to give one person my everything.” Sigh. “I guess it never will work out. We’re too different.”

“Oh hush. That’s not the reason it won’t work. We’re from two very different realms.”

Sigh. “Right. I guess cats and dogs can only just be friends.”

“We always knew it wouldn’t work. Now, shut up, and eat your kibble.”
