For My Angel
I envy the moon who formed you
How she labored you among stars
So I drink from the water that held you
Its placid face with ephemeral mars
I first saw you draped over roots
The sight of a graveside lover
The earth swelled with your slow breaths
And shadows fought to be your cover
I was formed in a needy fire
The sun left me here to burn
My whisper is a banshee scream
I am only naked and know only to yearn
The water sits bitter on my tongue
Pressed in the mud, my feet feel your pulse
My wraithish heart is gnashing inside
The skies erupt with a sentencing verse
I find you again by breaths in the night
Your body cloaked with feathers and bones
My pupils turn to desperate tar pits
The mud boils as I release a moan
My starving teeth reach for your throat
And you step close to soak in the glow
You’re an angel worth devouring
But then you murmur warm and low
As the flames tear open my skin
You connect your eyes to mine
Thorned brambles twist behind the glass
You’re a fortress of beauty entwined
My fire engulfs you but you do not burn
Your thorns traverse me eager to learn
My darling, you whisper
My angel, I cry
- I’ll drink you forever
- I’ll rest by your side
