The wooden door was open only slightly but the conversation inside was clear as crystalline

water.

“She can’t be here anymore.” The voice said. “She needs someone to discipline her and

take care of her as a real parent should.”

“Of course, but we provide only the best care possible here.” Another replied. “I assure you

she’s getting what she needs.”

Emma jacks assumed that the second voice was the orphanage’s administrator’s voice but the second she was unsure of. She shifted her place in the hall to see the stranger. As emma saw the stranger, her face paled to match the clouds outside the adjacent window. The unknown person turned out to be known all too well. It was Mrs. Adeline. The most stuck up person Emma had ever met.

“No, no, no. I simply must- absolutely must- take her home.” Mrs. Adeline insisted.

“Well… we certainly will miss her charming smile around here.” The administrator sighed. “She is so good with the younger children.” Emma smiled. The administratior would never let her go with that mean old lady.

“I thought the purpose of an orphanage was to take care of a child until someone else came to adopt that child!” Mrs. Adeline sounded outraged. ‘Now, then, i am here to adopt this young lady. She has great potential and i am here to take her and teach her how to be a good young lady in society.”

“Alright.” The administrator acquiesced. “Ill tell her shortly. Shell be ready by tomorrow evening.”

“Good.”

Emma’s jaw dropped. No, no, no, this could not be happening. He was just going to let her go. Suddenly, she wanted nothing but to run. So, she did. She left her place by the door in the hallway and fled, tears streaming down her face in streams. Emma ran until she could run no more because the tears were blinding her. Hiding in the closet of her bedroom was the only comfort she took in this seemingly dark time in her life. If only someone would take her away to a life of her dreams. One that was far away from here.
