STORY STARTER

Write a scene where two characters are on a terrible date.

Awkward

It wasn’t everyday Grace found herself on a date, let alone a blind date. She was told that it wasn’t someone she already knew. She was _promised_ that it wasn’t someone she already knew.. and yet here she is, awkwardly fiddling with a napkin as she tries not to make eye contact with her boss who just walked through the door as all the blood drains from her face.

_Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap-_

Macmillan’s footsteps make their way towards the table before stopping. Grace_ knows_ that’s her footsteps, they are far too quiet as always.

“Please tell me you’re not here for a date.” Is the first thing that falls from Mac’s painted lips and Grace finally looks up with a soft disbelieving laugh.

“Would hate to lie to ya like that.” Grace sighs before gesturing to the chair across from her. “Go ahead then, Mike said he’d pay for drinks if I agreed to this so we might as well get something out of this.”

There’s a brief moment of silence as Macmillan seems to consider the offer before deciding to take the seat across from Grace. She’s in sensible shoes, hence the stealthy approach that Grace likely wouldn’t have picked up if not for Macmillan’s teaching. Along with the shoes is a dress clearly designed for going out, though the fact that nothing else about her outfit suggests a similar goal has Grace suspecting that the dress was worn under duress.

Grace must admit that her choice in attire is not much different and it’s comforting in a way. It’s like a night out after a long day at work rather than a soul crushing date that leaves her wondering if she’s simply better off on her own.

And it’s even nicer when the alcohol finally gets to the table.
