STORY STARTER

Submitted by Orelli

I grab my sister's hand and pull her towards the cliff edge with me. She nods slowly in my direction. Then we jump.

Write the story leading up to, or going forward from, here.

No Going Back

Hey! I chose to write this prompt to practice my overall writing skills, as this isn’t something I would typically write. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!

PLEASE NOTE: I wrote based off the prompt, which may be a disturbing topic to some. Please read at your own decision!

I wake in the middle of the night, her sobs softly creeping through the thin walls of our house. _She is not okay_. And it ruins me

The floorboards creek under my feet as I stumble in the dark to her room. Her helpless cries growing louder as I inch towards her door. She is breaking. She is _broken_.

And the shaking sobs stop.

Tears bloom in my eyes at the sight of her. She is disheveled. And there she lays, on top of her bed sheet, numb and still. _Oh no. _

__

__

_My heart becomes heavy in my chest. Did she really-_

__

__

I cry out. I can’t do this anymore. _We_ can’t do this anymore. I pray for a chance, for her to wake up calling for me one more time. To see her smile once more. And then, it’s as if we were blessed at that very moment.

__

__

She wakes up and stares at me. She cried herself to sleep. “She’s alive, she’s alive,” I repeat to myself. “_She’s_ _alive_.”

“I need to go for a walk,” she whispers. A _walk_. Something is very wrong, and most of me doesn’t want to know what it is.

“Okay,” my voice is coarse and shaky. “Let’s go then.”

She grabs her pouch and stumbles across the dark room towards me. We boost eachother out of her bedroom window, praying our parents do not hear. The consequences would be _endless. _

__

The consequences would be _terrible_. _Torturing_.

_We are not meant for this world_.

Our house sits atop a cliff, the entire ocean seems to be at our disposal. But at this height, all we can do is stare into the endless darkness of what is the sea, while the moonlight pulls the waves, allowing them to crash into the base of the cliff.

A sharp tear of paper startles me. I look to my left, she’s writing. I step closer, she’s writing letters. _What is she doing?_

__

__

My breathing stops. She wants to end everything. Right here, right now.

“No!” I barely manage a yell. “You can’t._ Please. You can’t do this to me_.” I beg her. She can’t leave me alone in this world.

She sighs and peers onto the peaceful ocean. We both wish our lives could be as calm as the lapsing waves in the distance. “I can’t stay any longer. You _know_ that.” My vision goes blurry. I feel tears spilling down my cheeks.

_This is it. _

__

_“I’ll go with you,” _my words escape my lips before I realize what I’m offering.

She _smiles_. A rare occurrence I have had yet to experience since the beginning of the night.

There’s no turning back now. We walk towards the edge of the cliff. To our ruin. To our deaths.

She looks at me, pulling the both of us forward. “I left the letters on the table,” she explains “we’re free.”

We look at eachother one last time, knowing this life will never find us again. Wishing this life had never found us in the first place. Our sobs fill the still, quiet air. I look at her scarred hand grasping onto mine. “On three?” I whisper.

She nods. Time stops.

_One_

_Two_

_Three_

__

__

The world turns dark. Cold_. _We disappear from the cruel world that once awaited us, having no plan to return anytime soon. _We are free. _
