WRITING OBSTACLE

In a country where it’s always daytime, a character travels in search of the anonymity that darkness offers.

Write a story about this traveler and their motivations.

In darkness comes the brightest truth

Our country lies in the farthest end of the north pole. As earth rotates, the other countries experience the cycle of day and night, light and dark while ours remain unaffected, always bright and sunny. While some think of it as a gift, I wonder of darkness. Daytime affects our sleep cycle but we got used to it. But what we didn't get used to is the constant visibility of our actions. Always being visible, following the strict social norms at all time was getting stiff for us youngsters. The only privacy we get is in our homes which are fitted with large windows to let the daylight in. I often pondered over the mystery of darkness, the feeling of anonymity and freedom from relentless social norms. When I attained adulthood, I took my first step out of the country. My first item on the bucket list was to experience the night, the calmness of darkness and the mystery within. As soon as I landed in another country, I eagerly awaited the night to fall. And it came. And I saw for the first time, the darkness, the absence of daylight, the dingy lit corners, the calmness as it befalls on a once vibrant street. I kept walking across the street, taking in everything in front of me. I experienced the coolness from sunrays, the usually chirping birds sleeping, the usual cicada noises which were silent and the vibrant colors from artificial lights. But what I saw in the changing behavior of people was nothing like others. The usual hurriedness of daytime was transformed into relaxed strolling, groups of friends going for drinks, A shy person practicing dancing in an empty park and a couple sharing moments of intimacy on a bench. But as there are positives, so came the negatives. Darkness brings out the true character of people. I witnessed a robbery in a dingy alley, married men stopping by promiscuous women, drugs and money exchanging hands around the corner. As I boarded my return flight, I took with me the lessons of a world of darkness and a new perspective for my experiences in my own country.
