Space Spiders

Nora huffed, rolling her shoulders as she prepared to push through the mess of pipes and wires. “And you’re _sure_ no one else can do this?”

She turned to look at the alien behind her, Finn’s mist-like hair waving in a way that reminded her of a slow-burning flame. His eyes were fully black with specks of starlight in them. His brows pinched and his voice filtered into her brain; it made her shiver everytime the mouthless alien ‘spoke’.

“_You’re the only one durable enough_.”

“What about Mocci?”

Finn reeled back, eyeing Nora up and down. “_You really think Mocci could fit in there? Besides, your complaints aren’t half as annoying_.”

Nora sighed and placed her hand on the pipe next to her only to wrench it back as the hot metal hissed. She swallowed back the lump in her throat and started into the maze. “Oh, you are so lucky I’m not a violent person…”

“_You’re human..?_”

Nora jumped at Finn’s voice in her head. “Dude! That’s jumping to conclusions a bit now isn’t it? Just because I’m human doesn’t mean I’m violent. Now, what am I looking for?”

A beep came from her wrist. The holopad was neat, but it was stored in a clunky wrist-bracer. Well, at least for Nora and Finn. For her other crewmates it depended. Usually arms were common in sapient species, but there were a few exceptions.

The holopad wooshed to life as she brought it forward and a diagram of what Nora could relate to a breaker box, stitched itself together.

Galactic common was a necessity for space travel considering that’s what everything was written with. However, Nora was not too good with the language yet and her puzzled expression only pointed out that fact.

“What the heck is a- a…” She narrowed her eyes at the font. “Ornalics Foot?” Translations were weird.

“_It’s a bolt that is reminiscent of ornalic footprints. Uh… Like those little bread things that curve you made us._”

Nora raised a brow and looked to the box at the end of the pipe alley. Opening the box with a grunt, Nora frowned at yet another mess of wires but this time it had buttons and plugs mixed in. “You mean the crescants?”

“_Yeah, sure. That._” Finn’s presence in her mind suddenly dissipated and she heard snorting and huffing. Doxie, probably. The caniscua always somehow managed to find whatever trouble was going on.

Nora probably should have been paying more attention to her surroundings than to the incoming crewmate. Something tickled on her arm and her breath hitched.

Looking down, there was a walnut sized spider-looking thing crawling up to her elbow, leaving a thin string of golden silk behind it.

Nora, appropriately, screamed. She shook her hand and backed into one of the pipes with a thump. Pain flared through her back as she made contact with the hot metal.

“_Nora?!_”

The was the scraping of metal and a low bark from Doxie. “Bora!” The canine-looking alien couldn’t quite pronounce her name, but Nora didn’t really care.

“WHY ARE THERE SPIDERS IN SPACE?! WHY THE F-“ Nora took a shaky breath, rubbing her arms both to comfort herself and to remove any extra silk from her skin. “Where did it go?”

“_Where did what go, Nora? What happened?_”

Nora looked to the entrance of the pipe-lined alleyway. Doxie was panting with stress, her pawed digits trying to find a way into the tight space. Finn’s eyes were wide and his hair flickered wildly.

“There was a- a spider. A bug. Uh… it was purple and had eight legs and, like, gold webbing coming from its butt!” Wanting to get this over with, Nora went back to the box and quickly gathered the spiral wire and placed it in the outlet then twisted the crescent Ornalic Foot.

There was silence.

Then, a snort and and a wheeze from Doxie and Finn respectively.

Nora whipped around and glared at the two. “What? What’s so funny?!”

Finn’s hair settled down to flowing like long grass. “_Nora, calm down. That was a Sulian bug. They eat algae and mold_.”

The human felt her face heat with embarrassment as she stepped out of the alleyway. “Well it looked like a spider. And those things are scary! You owe me for this.”

Finn’s eyes twinkled with amusement and Doxie snorted again.

“_I’ll do your chores today and tomorrow._”

“The whole week.”

“_Fine_.”
