Escaping Isolation
I jolted from my thoughts as I heard the doorbell ring. I gaped at the book infront of me as it rang a second time. The chair tipped over as I got up to rush to the front door. I yanked it open slightly out of breath eyeing the postman infront of me in bewilderment.
Noone ever comes out this way. My home is at the edge of my hometown. I was raised in it by my great aunt and uncle. I had always been introverted and was homeschooled as a child. I rarely go into town except to pick up the groceries and the rare piece of mail. The postman eyed me with impatience and cleared his throat breaking my out of my thoughts.
“Good day ma’am. Would you please sign for this package?” He asked
“Of course, yes, sure” I rushed to say.
I took the pamphlet and pen from him, quickly signed and handed it back. He tucked it away and handed me a large weighty brown envelope. I thanked him and watched him walk back to his van and drive away until he was out of sight. I closed the door and walked back to the sunroom looking at the envelope curiously. The envelope said that it came from a travel agency called WANDER-FULL.
I sat down at the desk and grabbed the letter opener. I slid it under the flap neatly slicing it open. I took out the various items and rest them on the desk. Most of it seemed like brochures and documents. I picked up the first paper with my name on it from the top of the pile. It informed me that I had won a competition for a trip around the world.
I don’t know how this happened because I don’t remember signing up for anything. I would never. I like my home. I like my little town. People terrify me. What is this.
The letter informed me of all the information pertaining the trip and that it would be starting in a week and that I was to get into contact with Doreen Vanderhaul for more information and to finalize arrangements.
I looked out of the window and took a deep breath. The garden was still. Quiet. In my hands I held the mystery, or what others might consider adventure, of a lifetime. I looked at the picture on my desk and wondered …
