POEM STARTER

Did I cross the line...?

Write a poem or short story about a character going too far.

Crossed

Did I cross a line when I cupped your face?

Relishing in the smooth skin, mapping out the moles like landmarks

I’ll revisit

Over and over again

My lips travel to your neck, down to your broad shoulders

Did I cross a line when I drowned in your eyes?

Confessing with my heart-shaped pupils that I’d let you become my downfall

Ruin me

Did I cross a line when I left small pieces of my soul with you?

In your bedroom, in your car, in your arms

Gift-giving proficiency

I expect nothing but undivided affection in return

I do not mean to ask for much

Despite how much I’ve sacrificed

So, tell me

Have I crossed a line?

A line through your jaded heart where winters overlap with summers

And your arms around me begin to loosen

You’re not fond of commitments

Though your toes have toyed with the smudged boundary

Perhaps, the line was never crossed

It’s done its job keeping us separate

A border to keep me safe from your transgressions

It was never meant to be breached

I’ll stay pondering

Whether lines are meant to be crossed

Respected or avoided

Addressed or ignored

Or maybe, there wasn’t even a line to begin with
