Final Words…

His hands trembled as he lifted his phone to his ear. He hoped she wouldn’t hear his heavy breathing.

“Hello? What is it, honey?” She sounded tired.

“Hey, I couldn’t sleep, wanted to talk to you. Sorry. Did I wake you?”

“Yah, but I’d rather speak to you.”

“Would you, tell me how your day went?”

“Sure, so I started the morning how I usually…”

Her voice cut in and out as he began to fall asleep. At least that’s what it felt like.

He looked down at the blood pouring from his chest. It was beginning to well up in his throat. Her voice was so pleasant. Like a cold drink after a warm day. Tears began to flow down his face. So many words built up, so many wishes.

“Honey?”

“I-I’m here.”

“You alright? Your voice sounds gargled.”

“Just tired, long day at work. Sorry to ask, but could you, sing? Or even hum, for me? Just till I fall asleep.”

“Of course.”

“Thanks, I love you s-so much and I always will.”

“Aww! I love you too.”

He listened as she softly sang a song they often heard on the radio. He didn’t want to leave. But the ambulance would never be there in time. The phone slipped from his limp fingers.

“Honey? You still there?”

“…..”

“Goodnight, love you.”
