Family Undone

The screaming and profanity echoes through the house. My mother and father are fighting, again. This has been happening more, and more as the months go by. The creak of my door startles me. “June… I don’t like this. Can I sit with you?” My little sister, Aurora, has been witnessing this fued along with me. “It’s okay Rory, let’s watch some ‘toons.” I say as I place her onto my bed and into my arms. Aurora and I watch cartoons until we fall asleep.

The next morning is silent. My mother must be at work. I can hear slight mumbles from my fathers office. I slip away from Rory as she sleeps peacefully, and walk up to my fathers door trying to get a better listen. I think he’s been having an affair, maybe that’s why the shouting won’t end. Maybe that new young assistant of his at work… or maybe the cute sweet barista that makes his coffees every morning- either way, mom won’t tell me what’s happening, and I need to figure it out.

The office door is cracked open just a smidge, enough for me to open a little to peek inside without him noticing. I slowly push the door open as quiet as I can be. “Please, just give me one more dose. I can’t have my marriage fail Nadia. I’ll do whatever it takes, one more!” I hear my dads deep voice speak. Is this about drugs? He’s facing away from the door, and I can’t see who is in front of him. “You have had enough time to be a loving husband and make her fall in love with you naturally. I cannot allow you to have any more. You failed yourself, Mr. Richardson. It’s up to you to repair the damage you’ve done.” A female voice speaks and raises the hairs on my neck. My father puts his head in his hands and puts his head down. My jaw hits the floor and my eyes are widened. My father is talking to… a fairy?
