My Ears Were Burning
I was carrying the last box into my bedroom when I heard the footsteps from above my head. I'd heard the walls in these places were thin, but this took the mick. I could hear every thump, every bump. It was clear I wasn’t going to get any sleep that night.
As I was tucking myself into my new bed, I heard whispering coming from the room above me. Being the nosey Parker I am, I couldn't help, but stand on my bed and raise an ear to the ceiling. What I heard would change my perspective on humanity altogether.
“I heard this is their first home Marvin, we have to do something for them!!!” One person said to the other.
“What do you want to do? Get everyone together and throw a party?” Said Marvin.
“That’s a fantastic idea!!!”
“Mandy I was joking…”
“We’re doing it Marv!!!”
That Saturday as I got in from work, Mandy pulled me to one side and asked me to follow her into the community garden. I followed her and saw all my new neighbours standing around a giant banner saying ‘Welcome Neighbour’ I burst into tears on the spot. I don’t know how they’d heard about my parents kicking me out, but they all came together to welcome me. This is my family now, and I couldn’t be happier.
