The Wizard, The Goblin, and The Dice
Marigold tromped through the mud, her violet robe skimming over the surface. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t get a single spec of mud on it. It was magic after all. Marigold had been walking for days and her feet had begun to tire.
Just after she rubbed her eyes out of dreariness, five goblins jumped out of the tree line beside her. All of which held clubs.
The first goblin grinned nastily. "What do we have here?"
The second goblin snorted. "Looks like a little sorcerer that has lost her way." The five began to dance menacingly.
Marigold was by no means little. With her graying white hair and patched robe, she could have passed for a grandma. At least if that grandma had once defeated a dragon as Marigold had.
"Well, aren't you going to say something?" Teased the first goblin, clearly wanting to see her speechless.
The great Marigold opened her mouth to speak... before rolling a twenty-sided die for charisma.
The goblins waited patiently as Marigold watched the die come to a stop. "Dang," Marigold whispered to herself. The role was a 4. She looked up to the goblins, again assuming her roleplaying look. She spoke as confidently as she could, but her voice cracked halfway through. "Don't do something you'll regret." The goblins only snickered.
Suddenly, a goblin stepped forward. They lifted their bat... and rolled their twenty-sided die. It stopped on a 15. They smiled widely at it, before charging wildly toward Marigold. She tried to dodge, but she was hit in the side of the torso by the hard wooden bat.
Marigold grabbed her side. "You're going to regret that." She rolled her dice again, and it was a 9. She grimaced, before pushing out her hand, throwing the goblin to the ground with an invisible force.
The goblin landed on the ground with a thud but stood up a second later. No damage seems to have been done. The goblin's face held a toothy grin.
Suddenly, the next goblin rolled. It was an 18. They charged at Marigold, doing a double frontflip through the air and swinging their bat at her head. It landed with a sickening crunch.
Marigold fell backwards and onto the ground. She knew she should have spent more time on her armour points. Her health points were now so low, that a single hit could wipe her out.
Against her better judgment, she stood up once again. She pulled back her sleeves before rolling her dice across the ground. She watched all the numbers pass by. 13, 16, 12, 5, 2, 8. But when the rolling began to slow, it was heading towards 1. She wanted to scream, to run, to hide, but she couldn't. The dice had been rolled. As it began to land on 1, Marigold thought she felt an extra-strong gust of wind. Unexpectedly, the dice rolled passed 1 and straight to a 20. Marigold fell to her knees. She felt her insides churn with excitement. Never before have the gods allowed her to roll a twenty. Slowly, as she stood up, she saw the look of horror dawn on the goblins' faces.
In one swift movement, Marigold raised both her hands to the sky. As the giant ball of fire began to accumulate above them, the goblins began to run for their lives. Better for her, Marigold thought. She would no longer be in the blast radius.
She pushed forward her hands and the giant ball of fire flew through the sky. It hit the ground with a deafening explosion, with all the goblins getting turned to ash.
Marigold looked proudly at the crater. She picked up her stuff to once again resume her journey, but stopped before moving on. She turned to the cloudy sky with one hand raised, then she flipped the heavens off. It was one thing for your dungeon master to throw a couple of goblins at you, but when it comes to Mondays, all Marigold wanted to do was finish her quest and go home.
(Author's note: This was based on the game Dungeons and Dragons. I used to play it when I was a kid, but I haven't played in a while. Just wanted to say this in case any of the DnD fans out there get mad at me. I am happy to take any criticism on my writing, so don't hold back.)
