POEM STARTER
Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.
Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.
Dear Heart
Gnarly spindles
Mitochondrially dense
mighty muscles
Contracting and releasing; contracting and releasing
You know no one wants you here
Liver and left kidney talk shit about you all day
Gallbladder skipped town
Lazy bastard Pancreas is MIA
Uterus abandoned me long ago,
Taking my favorite ovary
And I’m still here
Broken and shuddering
Counting each beat
At the first slap of morning
And don’t tell me about metaphors
And fricking resilience
That’s hallmark malarkey you picked up from Brain
and there’s no trusting what’s left of her
Read the room dear heart
Shuttered capillaries, dust-caked lungs
Nerves threadbare and forlorn
foreclosure signs written in every wrinkle
Yet here we are
Contracting and releasing
thumping in the hollow of a cage
Having the same conversation
