Fate
The blue and red lights flicker across the night sky as I open my eyes. I can’t make out what exactly is happening before me. I feel something trickling down my arm, my head is pounding. I can’t breath. There are so many noises happening all around me. I strain to make any of them out.
“It is over there!” Someone with a deep voice bellows from off to the left of me.
I turn my head in the direction and I blinding pain shoots through my whole body.
I scream. But a sound barely audible is all that came outs. I open my eyes once more. I am upside down.
How?
My eyes dart around frantically as I take in the scene around me. And I notice beneath me appears to be a puddle. Deep red and thick. Am I bleeding?
“Sierra? Are you ok?” I familiar voice questions
I glance over to see my sister, Heidi hanging there in the passenger side seat.
“What happened?” I ask. The words coming in barely a whisper.
“Let’s put it this way, you tiny Civic versus a dump truck, the truck is going to win.” She try’s to joke. She has always done that, tried to lighten even the darkest moments. She got it from our Father. And usually it works but I don’t laugh. Instead I try to remember.
We were heading home from a party, I think. And we’re listening to a song. Which one I can’t quite make out. And we pulled up to the red light. And it turned green. I released the break and then I heard the horn. And that is it.
Judging by what she has told me I think it hit my side.
I am pulled out of my thoughts when I realize that Heidi is speaking with someone.
“Please help us. My-my sister, she is really hurt!” She calls
“We are right here we just need you guys to stay calm. We will get you out.” It is the same voice as before.
“You hear that Sierra they are right here we are going to be ok. You just hold on a little longer!” Heidi pleads
My vision is starting to blur. Everything hurts. Now matter how hard I try I can’t seem to stay focused. My breathing my shakes at best. And I can’t move.
“Sierra!” I hear the voice from before calling.
I open my eyes
“There you are you stay with me you hear.” He says
“Heidi?” I ask in a strangled voice, as loud as I can manage
“Your sister is just fine, she is with the medics. My name is Sergeant Peters. Now I have to ask you to stay very still for me. We are going to get you out of here ok.” He says
I peer over toward him. His face is soft but his eyes tell me everything I thought is true. This is bad and he doesn’t know if what he is saying is true. He doesn’t know if they are get me out of here alive.
“Just stay with me!” His pleads start to fade
As does the pain. And it is replaced with a cold that I can’t begin to describe. My breathing stops.
And soon after so does my heart.
I never thought I would leave this world the same way Mom and Dad did. I only hope Heidi can forgive me.
