WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a letter to a friend, from the perspective of someone living 100 years in the future.

What commonplace things might they mention that would surprise a reader now, and how can you use these to drive an interesting narrative?

Dear Friend

Dear friend,

You may not remember nor know me, but I know you. I have known you for a millennia. The year for you is 2025 but the year for me is 2125. How I awoke in the future, I am not sure as I am in the same body I was in one hundred years ago. I awake once per century within a new body, or reincarnation, as you mortals like to call it. My soul and memories stay intact preventing me from living a truly normal life; my countless lives have blended together over and over again… All I want is for my life to end, yet I know it won’t. My life will continue until the end of time and maybe even longer, I may never know.

There was once a story of my youth back in the days of old. Even now, in 2125, it’s told by the masses through a book with the title long scraped away. The story remains unaltered as a lesson to the youth of preventing sin and tragedy. My story may be yet to end as I’ve long forgotten my true name, so instead I’ve taken the name given to me by the story of my brother and I’s youths.

Your friend,

Cain
