Full Moon
J: What changed your mind?
A: Do you really want to waste time?
J: Every time I suggest doing something remotely fun you suddenly get busy.
A: Well the last time you were here I actually had to pick up my cousin from the airport.
J: Okay, but you always—
A: And that other time Harmony actually had a stomach bug. I was holding her hair back all night.
J: It’s not that I don’t believe you, I’m just surprised is all.
A: Whatever, what do I do?
J: Find a spot.
A: Any spot? This is too much pressure.
J: Girl, if you don’t just pick a corner.
A bird hops along the branches on the tree.
A: Did you hear that?
J: Hear what?
A: I think someone’s coming.
A rushes to gather the bags.
J: Hey, hey. No one comes over here. You’re paranoid.
A: I just thought I heard… and I can’t get caught tagging. I can’t have something like that on my record. I’m trying to— I just can’t—
J: Take a deep breath. Relax, okay.
A sits on the edge of the curb and does a few staggered breaths. J pulls his cans out of the bag.
J: Did you find a spot yet?
A: Yeah I think I want that area to the right, above the 8 thing.
J: 8 thing? You mean the glasses?
A: Glasses? It looks like a sideways 8. You think they’d be mad if I covered up this blue part? It won’t take away from the rest of the look, you know. I honestly think it will look better red.
J: Considering I’m the artist, I think they’d be pissed.
Silence.
A: I- I’m sorry, I didn’t know you did that one.
J: Yeah I actually did this whole half. I found this wall and just made it mine. That’s how I know no one comes back here. It’s abandoned.
A: I’m sorry, I feel like this is all going wrong. I shouldn’t be here
J: I watched you in Morelo’s class. You’re good. Really good. And I know you don’t usually do murals, but I think your vision would look amazing on a wall.
A: A wall. Your wall.
J puts a can in A’s hand.
J: Once you get started, you’ll feel the rush. Just be yourself. Make art.
A turns on some music and gets comfortable. 45 minutes later, J and A stand across from the wall.
J: I love it.
A: Me too. It really came out better than I imagined.
J: Its something about the application of an idea that makes art so magical…
A: It really is.
J: The blues and whites make it look like mystical.
A: Like a full moon…
J: I’m glad you did this with me tonight.
A: I don’t know what pushed me.
J: Just blame it on the full moon.
J and A look up at a full moon in the sky.
