In The Golden Night

Ammer and Mae sat unmoving, the twinkling stars above them brightening the night sky.

"I wish I could visit the stars." Mae's voice was quiet, almost a whisper.

Ammer turned to her, only then noticing how beautiful she appeared in the starlight. The golden light of the moon washed over her face, turning her eyes to pools of liquid gold.

"You look like a star." The words left his mouth before he could stop them, but he didn't wish to take them back.

Mae's face reddened instantly as she turned to Ammer, looking him in the eye.

Ammer sucked in a breath, overwhelmed by her gaze. Unable to maintain eye contact with a star in human form, he glanced to the sky, all the while watching her watch him through his peripheral vision.

Without a word, Mae scooted close enough to Ammer for their arms to press against each other. Then, to his surprise, she slowly leaned her head on his shoulder, sending a tingle all throughout his body.

Ammer wished he could freeze time. He didn't risk moving a single muscle, but he couldn't help himself from grinning the biggest grin he'd ever grinned. Feelings of warmth and excitement spread through his chest, making him feel like he would burst at any moment.

He knew he would have stayed in that moment forever, if forever existed.
