I walked down the stairs into a sea of people, who were all cheering for me around a large cake with candles to celebrate my “rebirth.” I smiled sheepishly, made thankful eye contact with a few in the crowd, then stopped in front of the cake. The flames warmed my skin and flickered in the reflection of my pupils—I could feel them more than I could see them. The flames reminded me that I was successfully defrosted the previous week after being frozen for over a century, “a miracle,” everyone called it. I wouldn’t call it that. Everyone’s kindness permeated me since I had awoken, but I wanted to be put back to sleep. Everyone talked funny—and what the fuck were they wearing? I closed my eyes and blew out the flames. The ballroom erupted in applause.
